Tenosynovitis

What is tenosynovitis?

Tenosynovitis is a condition which is caused by the inflammation of the sheath (or synovium) that surrounds the tendon. Usually people with tenosynovitis will also suffer from tendonitis, which occurs when the tendon becomes inflamed.

Who will get tenosynovitis?

Commonly, tenosynovitis is associated with repetitive movements such as typing or writing, but it may also be caused by medical conditions such as arthritis or an infection.

Treating tenosynovitis

Treatment will usually involve a combination of rest, ice, medication and physiotherapy in most cases. Steroid injections may also help to ease pain and increase movement in the affected area. Cases that have been caused by medical infections will require different treatments which will usually involve antibiotic medication.
