Dancing - Sports Massage

Dancing can put considerable strain on many of the muscle groups and can therefore cause a range of different injuries; these may be acute or progressive. Massage has become increasingly popular amongst dancers who use it as a means of preparation as well as a recovery aid and a method of conditioning.

Benefits of massage for dancers

Massage prior to dancing increases body temperature, loosens the muscles and joints and increases circulation; this helps to prepare the muscles for exercise and increase flexibility and movement. Massage also helps to prevent injury. After dancing, massage can reduce tension in the soft tissue as well as stretching the muscles to prevent injury; massage also helps to relax the mind. Deep tissue massages are very popular amongst ballet dancers as these improve posture and relax the muscles.
