What is Achilles tendonitis?

The Achilles tendon connects the calf to the heel and is instrumental for many types of movement. Achilles tendonitis occurs when the tendon becomes inflamed; in sport this is usually caused by overuse, sudden increases in the intensity of training sessions or quick movements. Tendonitis is common in professional sports players due to the continuous nature of training and competing.

Symptoms of Achilles tendonitis

Serious Achilles injuries, such as ruptures will be extremely painful and usually feel like the ankle has been kicked with force. Milder injuries, such as tendonitis, usually contribute to pain which may persist after activity has ceased; the area around the tendon may also swell and the calf may feel stiff. Pain may be more intense after a period of rest.

Treatment for Achilles tendonitis

Treatment for tendonitis usually involves a period of rest; the duration will vary depending on the severity of the condition. During the rest period, ice may be applied to the affected area and medication may be prescribed to control pain and reduce swelling. Steroid injections and physiotherapy may also be used to decrease pain and inflammation and increase strength and movement around the tendon. In exceptional cases, surgery may be required.
