Hallux limitus - Foot Injuries

Hallux limitus occurs when the big toe joint becomes sore and stiff; pain is usually heightened when the toe is bent.

Causes of hallux limitus

There are many possible causes of hallux limitus; the most common causes are impact, repetitive use and medical conditions such as arthritis. A common example of an impact injury is dropping a heavy object on the toe. Hallux limitus can also result from a different injury to the big toe joint. This injury is often progressive, meaning it gets worse as time passes.

Symptoms of hallux limitus

Common symptoms of this condition include swelling, stiffness and pain in and around the big toe joint; movement may also be restricted.

Treatment for hallux limitus

Treatment usually depends on the gravity of the injury. In mild cases, a combination of pain relief, anti-inflammatory medication and rest will usually facilitate a speedy recovery; injections of ostensil or cortisone injections will also help to restore normal movement and reduce swelling. In more serious cases, surgery may be carried out; this is particularly common when the condition has caused a bony lump to form on the top of the toe.
