Rugby can be brutal at times and the risk of suffering a back or neck injury is relatively high compared to some sports.

Back and neck pain

Back and neck pain are commonly caused by overuse and doing repetitive actions which put pressure on the back. In rugby, falling onto the ground can also cause back pain. Back and neck injuries may also be caused by physical contact with other players.

Symptoms of back and neck pain

Aside from the obvious pain, people with back or neck problems may also experience swelling, bruising and a restricted range of movement.

Treating back and neck pain

Treatment usually involves rest and a combination of anti-inflammatory and analgesic medication. Prolonged back or neck pain may be symptomatic of a more serious condition so it is advisable to get checked out by a doctor.
